How to Develop a Good Heart

Today is the final class of Geshe Tenley's commentary on patience, the theme of Chapter Six from a Guide to a Bodhisattva's Way of Life. If you would like to make an offering to Geshe Tenley or translator Damchoe in appreciation of their excellent teaching and translation, this class would be an appropriate time to do so. Beginning June 20, we will skip to Chapter 9 with its discussion on wisdom or emptiness. Geshe Tsulga will guide us through this difficult topic. Composed by the great bodhisattva Shantideva, this work is a Mahayana classic. It explains the great value of developing an altruistic mind and how to do so by removing obstacles and creating the requisite positive conditions. By hearing this advice and putting it into practice, our altruistic impulses can evolve from mere flashes of lightning in the dark of the night to steady illumination of love and compassion regardless of any situation. This course is suitable for all levels of students. Copies of A Guide to a Bodhisattva's Way of Life and commentaries on it are available for purchase in our bookstore. Tenets

Tenets explains the philosophical systems of the four main schools of Buddhist thought. These tenets represent increasing subtle understandings of the Buddhist view of emptiness. While students are often exposed to the Madhyamika view, which presents the most sophisticated philosophical premises, it is not often that the other tenets are presented. Yet without the background of the earlier and less accurate views, it is difficult to fully comprehend the most sophisticated one. This is an opportunity to see how the profound Madhyamika view evolved from and complements the more elementary teachings of the Vaibhashika, Sautrantika and Cittamatra schools. By attending this course, you can deepen your understanding of the Buddhist view of reality and get an overview of the entire wing of Buddhist wisdom. Geshe Tenley will devote three to four weeks to each of the Buddhist schools. It is not necessary to register in advance. All are welcome. Some reading and study outside of class is expected. This is a great opportunity—don’t miss it! Geshe Ngawang Tenley, who came to Kurukulla from Sera Je monastery in the spring of 2004, has been a monk for over fifteen years. Letter to a Friend

Letter to a Friend is a highly acclaimed poem by the great Indian Buddhist master Nagarjuna (1st-2nd century AD). Written by Nagarjuna for his friend King Surabhibhadra, it is relatively short in length, 123 verses, but spells out the entire path of Buddhism that leads to enlightement. Nagarjuna's advice to the King is pragmatic and pertinent to contemporary practictioners giving advice on avoiding distractions and living within ethical discipline. Other verses are more enigmatic so we are fortunate that Geshe Tenley can guide us through this text. Suitable for all level of students. Copies of the text are available for purchase in our bookstore or you can access an alternate translation at Alex Berzin's website. The Ornament of Clear Realizations
The Ornament summarizes the Buddha's vast Perfection of Wisdom teachings, describing the paths followed by bodhisattvas, hearers and solitary realizers and the fruits of their practice. This essential Mahayana text is difficult to comprehend without the interpretation of a skilled teacher. Geshe Ngawang Tenley, who is near completion of his geshe degree at Sera Je Monastery, continues the commentary this winter while Geshe Tsulga is away. Although this class is open to anyone, a background in the Lamrim teachings or familiarity with Buddhist philosophy is recommended for this intermediate level series. However, even without familiarity with the topic, Geshela has emphasized it is highly beneficial to listen in order to receive imprints which lays the foundation for understanding in the future.
